FAQs

Why Use Veneers?

Veneering has been around for hundreds of years. Artefacts covered with veneer have been found in the tombs of pharaohs. Until modern times veneered furniture could only be found in the possession of the wealthy. The materials and talent needed to produce veneered furniture were beyond the means of the common man, who was far more taken up with the practicalities of daily life. Of late many of us have become very conservation conscious. A rare tree sliced into veneer can adorn many more pieces of furniture than it could if used as solid timber, irrespective of whether or not it was cut from renewable resources.

Why Use MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)?

Conservation is one of the many reasons why we choose to use MDF. It is environmentally friendly being taken from fast growing pine woodlands, which take between 15 and 40 years to mature, and are being constantly replanted. Without exception, the basic carcass of our fire surrounds are constructed of MDF, until there is an alternative, we do have to resort to solid timbers for certain mouldings and facings. Other features of MDF include dense uniformity, producing precision contoured profiles, exceptional dimensional consistency, allowing for tighter tolerances and greater stability, especially around a fire opening burning a gas or solid fuel fire. Did you know that the vast majority of today’s quality furniture is manufactured from MDF?
